Description
Sadie Family Wines Pofadder Cinsault '22 is a singular expression of 100% Cinsault, crafted by the renowned Eben Sadie who treats this variety with the seriousness often reserved for Pinot Noir. The fruit is sourced from the Swartland region of South Africa, specifically from the western side of the Kasteelberg mountain. Here, dry-farmed old bush vines planted more than 45 years ago struggle in soils composed of slate and decomposed shale, imparting a distinctive mineral backbone to the wine. The 2022 vintage was characterized by a largely cool growing season that preserved exceptional freshness, punctuated by brief heatwaves that concentrated the fruit flavors. This climatic balance resulted in a wine that Sadie considers his finest release of Pofadder since the 2012 vintage.
Visually, the wine presents a vibrant, translucent ruby red color with excellent clarity. The nose offers an explosive and complex perfume, leading with primary notes of wild strawberries, crunchy red cherries, and a nuance of chocolate orange. These fruit aromatics are intricately woven with floral scents of crushed violets, rose petals, and hibiscus. As the wine breathes, secondary and tertiary layers emerge, revealing five-spice, sandalwood, and a distinct note of redbush (rooibos) tea. On the palate, this is a dry, medium-bodied red that juxtaposes a silky entry with a surprisingly firm, finely-grained tannin structure. The acidity is vibrant and perfectly judged, carrying flavors of pure red berries and savory earth through to an incredibly long, focused finish.
The farming and winemaking reflect a philosophy of minimal intervention and deep respect for the ecosystem. The vineyards are managed using organic and biodynamic practices to maintain soil health and vine vitality. In the cellar, approximately 50% of the grapes are fermented as whole clusters in open-top fermenters, utilizing gentle daily foot treading to extract color and tannin without harshness. Maturation takes place for about 12 months in very old, neutral oak casks (foudres), ensuring the vessel does not mask the fruit profile. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration to preserve its natural texture.
This wine’s high acidity and savory complexity make it a versatile companion at the dinner table. It pairs beautifully with crispy-skinned duck breast with a cherry reduction, where the wine's tart red fruit profile mirrors the sauce while the tannins cut through the rich fat. For a more rustic option, serve it alongside grilled pork tenderloin with a smoky paprika and fennel rub; the wine's inherent spice notes will harmonize perfectly with the char and seasoning. The 2022 Pofadder has garnered significant critical acclaim, receiving 96 points from both Decanter and Tim Atkin MW, as well as 95 points from Neal Martin of Vinous, who stated, "Cinsault doesn't get better than this." Given these scores, it represents remarkable value in the world of fine wine.
