Description
Roland Champion, Grand Éclat Blanc de Blancs Champagne Grand Cru 2016
This exquisite cuvée represents a pure, terroir-driven expression of 100% Chardonnay, sourced exclusively from the prestigious Grand Cru village of Chouilly at the northern tip of the Côte des Blancs. The vineyards are anchored in the region's famed Belemnite chalk soils, which are essential for water regulation and imparting the wine's structural backbone. The 2016 vintage in Champagne was a year of dramatic contrasts, beginning with challenging spring frosts and heavy rainfall that necessitated rigorous vineyard management to combat mildew. However, a warm, dry summer and a sunny September allowed for a late harvest, resulting in grapes with concentrated flavors and vibrant acidity despite the reduced yields. As a Récoltant Manipulant (grower-producer), the Champion family oversees every stage of production, adhering to a philosophy of sustainable viticulture to preserve the health of their distinct terroir.
In the glass, the wine displays a luminous pale gold hue with exceptional clarity and a steady stream of fine, persistent bubbles. The nose is complex and inviting, revealing a bouquet of ripe orchard fruits such as Anjou pear and golden delicious apple, layered with sophisticated aromas of fresh brioche, rising dough, and toasted hazelnuts derived from its extended cellar aging. On the palate, this is a dry, medium-bodied Champagne that showcases the signature roundness and generosity of Chouilly. The texture is creamy and refined, balancing the vintage's crisp acidity with lush flavors of lemon curd, white peach, and a hint of acacia honey. The finish is long and precise, trailing off with a distinct chalky minerality and a savory note of almond skin.
The winemaking process for the Grand Éclat emphasizes patience and texture; the wine spends over six years aging on the lees, a duration that significantly enhances its autolytic depth and mouthfeel. Ideally suited for fine dining, this Champagne offers versatile pairing potential. It pairs beautifully with seared New England scallops with a lemon-butter reduction, where the wine's acidity cuts through the rich sauce while its minerality mirrors the sweetness of the shellfish. For a more casual yet decadent American pairing, serve this with Southern-style fried chicken; the wine's effervescence and acidity cleanse the palate of the savory fats, while its yeasty, bready notes perfectly complement the crispy coating. Wine Spectator awarded this vintage 92 points, highlighting its richness and complexity, confirming its status as an excellent value within the realm of Grand Cru grower Champagne.
