Description
Reyneke Reserve White '21 (Sauvignon Blanc)
This wine is a focused, single-varietal expression comprising 100% Sauvignon Blanc, sourced exclusively from specific, south-facing parcels in the Polkadraai Hills of Stellenbosch. These vines are rooted in ancient, decomposed granite soils, which contribute significantly to the wine's structural tension and mineral drive. The 2021 vintage in Stellenbosch was characterized by cooler conditions and a prolonged ripening season, allowing the grapes to develop intense aromatic concentration while retaining the high natural acidity essential for this style of serious, age-worthy white wine.
In the glass, the wine presents a brilliant pale straw hue with distinct golden highlights that hint at its barrel maturation. The nose is complex and arrestingly pure, offering a sophisticated bouquet of sliced lime, grapefruit zest, and elderflower, underpinned by a striking flinty, wet-stone minerality. As the wine opens, subtle tertiary notes of cedar spice and fresh brioche emerge, woven together with a touch of blackcurrant leaf. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, texturally rich wine that defies the lightweight conventions of the variety. It is technically dry, yet the fruit intensity provides a perception of sucrose-free sweetness, featuring layers of white peach, quince, and lemongrass. The acidity is electric and taut (TA 6.9 g/l), cutting through the creamy weight derived from the oak, leading to a finish that is exceptionally long, saline, and savory.
Reyneke is a pioneer of biodynamic farming in South Africa, certified by Demeter, and views the farm as a self-sustaining living organism. They eschew synthetic chemicals in favor of natural preparations to foster soil health and biodiversity. Winemaker Nuschka de Vos employs a philosophy of minimal intervention to translate this terroir into the bottle. The grapes were whole-bunch pressed and underwent spontaneous fermentation in 300L French oak barrels, 80% of which were new. The wine was then aged on its gross lees for 10 months, a technique that builds the wine's characteristic mid-palate weight and integrates the oak seamlessy before bottling.
Given its texture and acidity, this Sauvignon Blanc requires food with equal substance. It pairs magnificently with Maryland-style crab cakes; the wine's sharp acidity cuts through the richness of the crab and remoulade, while its weight stands up to the frying. Alternatively, try it with a grilled swordfish steak topped with lemon-caper butter, where the wine's citrus notes mirror the sauce and its flinty minerality complements the char of the fish. This vintage has received significant acclaim, including a stellar 95-point rating from Tim Atkin MW, solidifying its status as a world-class white that rivals top Bordeaux Blancs at a fraction of the price.
