Description
Quinta do Mouro Tinto Estremoz '18
This "Gold Label" release is the flagship wine from Miguel Louro, a dentist-turned-winemaker who famously purchased this Estremoz estate over a Porsche in a high-stakes poker decision. The 2018 vintage represents a complex, meticulously assembled blend of 35% Alicante Bouschet, 25% Aragonez, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Touriga Nacional, and 10% Trincadeira. The inclusion of Trincadeira is particularly notable for this vintage; while Louro historically avoided the grape, it thrived during the 2018 growing season, contributing a unique aromatic lift that balances the wine's inherent power.
The 2018 vintage in Alentejo was a "rollercoaster" characterized by a rainy spring followed by intense August heat spikes. This climatic drama delayed the harvest but ultimately yielded fruit with fantastic concentration and a surprisingly high natural acidity. The vines are dry-farmed on a complex soil mosaic of schist, clay, and marble at an elevation of over 400 meters. These rugged conditions force the roots deep into the earth, resulting in a wine that authentically translates the "elegant rusticity" of the Estremoz terroir.
In the glass, the wine displays a deep, brooding ruby color with a slight garnet rim, indicating its concentration. The nose is a whirlwind of complexity, offering primary aromas of black plum, blackberry jam, and dried figs. These are layered with savory, secondary notes of worn leather, tobacco leaf, and a distinct earthy character often described as "brick dust" or graphite. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, dry wine that balances its substantial weight with vibrant freshness. Flavors of dark forest fruit and cedar are supported by firm, dusty tannins and a lively acidity that drives an impressively long, sophisticated finish.
Miguel Louro is an iconoclast who favors traditional, minimalist winemaking over modern intervention. The grapes were hand-harvested and crushed by foot in traditional stone lagares, fermenting with native yeasts to capture the true essence of the vineyard. The wine was then aged for approximately 14 months in 300-liter barrels of French and Portuguese oak (50% new), allowing the wood to structure the wine without masking its unique varietal character.
This wine’s bold structure and savory depth make it an ideal partner for rich, American-style cuisine. It would be a knockout pairing with a slow-smoked beef brisket slathered in a peppery barbecue sauce, as the wine's tannins will cut through the rendered fat and char. Alternatively, pair it with grilled lamb chops seasoned with rosemary and garlic, or a bone-in ribeye steak with chimichurri. The wine has received significant critical acclaim, including a stellar 94 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, which praised its "perfumed" complexity and character. For a wine with such high pedigree, it remains a remarkable value in its class.
