Description
Queirón Gabriel Reserva 2011
This distinguished Rioja Reserva is a precise blend of 83% Tempranillo and 17% Graciano, sourced exclusively from two high-altitude vineyards in the village of Quel. The Tempranillo comes from the "La Pasada" vineyard, situated at 790 meters above sea level, while the Graciano is harvested from "El Pozo" at 650 meters. These specific plots in Rioja Oriental are defined by their poor, sandy loam soils and significant diurnal temperature shifts, which contribute to the wine's structural intensity and aromatic depth.
The 2011 vintage was officially rated "Excellent" by the Rioja Control Board, characterized by a warm spring and dry summer that ensured optimal ripening and exceptional health in the vines. The lack of rainfall concentrated the flavors, resulting in a wine of power and longevity. The high elevation of the vineyards played a critical role in preserving acidity during the warm growing season, balancing the ripe fruit profile with freshness and elegance.
In the glass, the wine presents a deep, opaque cherry-red hue with maturing ruby and brick-red highlights at the rim, indicative of its extended aging. The nose is complex and heady, offering profound aromas of ripe black figs, macerated cherries, and dark plums, layered with secondary notes of roasted coffee, coconut, and sweet tobacco from the oak. As it opens, tertiary nuances of truffle, forest floor, and balsamic pastry emerge. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, dry wine with a fleshy, voluminous texture. The tannins are noble and polished, providing a firm backbone that supports flavors of berry compote, dark chocolate, and savory spices. The finish is long and mineral-driven, leaving a lasting impression of fruit and earth.
Winemaking at Queirón is meticulous and patient, reflecting the vision of founder Gabriel Pérez Cuevas. The grapes underwent a five-day pre-fermentation cold maceration to extract color and fruit aromas, followed by a long fermentation of over 18 days. The wine was then aged for 24 months in new extra-fine grain oak barrels (70% French and 30% American), followed by an impressive 36 months of bottle aging in the winery's underground cellar before release. This extended maturation ensures the wood is perfectly integrated with the fruit.
This robust Reserva pairs exceptionally well with rich, American-style dishes. It would be a perfect match for a grilled porterhouse steak with a rosemary-garlic compound butter, as the wine's tannins cut through the marbling while the herbal notes complement the seasoning. Alternatively, try it with slow-smoked beef brisket; the wine's smoky, spicy oak nuances will echo the flavors of the barbecue. For a vegetarian option, a wild mushroom risotto with aged parmesan highlights the wine's earthy truffle and forest floor characteristics.
Critics have recognized the quality of this vintage, with Decanter awarding it 93 points, praising its classic style and character. It represents remarkable value for a wine with such extensive aging and pedigree, offering the complexity of top-tier Rioja at a competitive price point.
