Description
Paradigm, Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
This sophisticated estate wine is a precise blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. Hailing from the prestigious Oakville AVA in Napa Valley, the fruit is grown on the winery's 55-acre estate located on the western benchlands, boasting well-drained alluvial soils and illustrious neighbors like To Kalon and Martha’s Vineyard. The 2021 vintage was characterized by drought conditions and low yields, resulting in small berries with intense concentration and flavor. It is widely considered a "winemaker's dream" vintage, offering a growing season free of heat spikes that allowed for steady, even ripening and the development of complex phenolics without excessive sugar accumulation.
In the glass, the wine displays a deep, opaque ruby-garnet hue that hints at its density. The nose is expressive and layered, opening with rich aromas of blackberry compote, black cherry, and cassis, interwoven with savory nuances of wild sage, crushed violets, graphite, and fresh cedar. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, dry wine that prioritizes elegance over sheer weight. It delivers a core of pure red and black berry fruit framed by "soaring" tannins—assertive yet beautifully integrated—and a backbone of crisp, juicy acidity. The texture is silky and refined, leading to a long, tension-filled finish marked by notes of brown spice, tobacco leaf, and a distinct mineral freshness typical of the Oakville bench.
The wine is crafted by legendary winemaker Heidi Barrett, who has shaped every vintage at Paradigm since its inception. The estate is farmed sustainably by owners Ren and Marilyn Harris, who focus on meticulous viticulture to express the site's terroir. For this vintage, fermentation took place in stainless steel with a small percentage of whole berries to enhance aromatic lift. Notably, the wine was pressed off the skins before going completely dry—a technique employed to soften the tannin profile. It was subsequently aged for approximately 20 months in French oak barrels (roughly 50% new) and spent an additional 20 months in bottle prior to release to ensure harmony.
This classically styled Cabernet shines when paired with rich, American-leaning dishes that can match its structure without overwhelming its elegant nuances. It pairs beautifully with a grilled ribeye steak finished with a rosemary-garlic butter, where the wine's tannins cut through the marbling while the herbal notes echo the seasoning. Alternatively, try it with slow-braised beef short ribs over polenta; the wine's acidity will lift the heaviness of the braise. Garnering significant critical acclaim, this vintage was awarded 97 points by Decanter and 95 points by Wilfred Wong. Despite its pedigree and high scores, it remains one of the few "reasonable" values in Oakville, often priced far below its neighbors.
