Description
O'Shaughnessy Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley '17
This commanding red serves as a masterclass in the art of blending, composed of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, and 5% Malbec. While many Napa bottlings rely on valley floor fruit, this wine is a rugged "mountain meets valley" assemblage sourced from the estate's prestigious vineyards on Mount Veeder (56%) and Howell Mountain (29%), balanced by the silkier textures of their Oakville estate (15%). The 2017 vintage was dramatic, defined by generous winter rains followed by a Labor Day heatwave and the infamous October wildfires; however, the O'Shaughnessy team displayed incredible resilience, harvesting the majority of this fruit between September 23rd and October 13th, capturing optimal ripeness largely before the smoke arrived.
In the glass, the wine presents a striking appearance, pouring a deep, opaque ruby-purple that clings to the sides with high viscosity. The nose is an evocative explosion of high-toned fruit and earth, offering aromas of crushed blackcurrants, wild plum, and crème de cassis, layered with sophisticated notes of dried violets, sandalwood, and a hint of sweet tobacco. On the palate, this is a full-bodied and dry wine, muscular yet surprisingly elegant. It delivers a concentrated core of boysenberry and bittersweet chocolate, framed by savory undertones of graphite and herbs. The structure is built on fine-grained, polished tannins that lead into a long, resonant finish marked by a distinct cedar and iodine-like savory edge.
Winemaker Sean Capiaux continues his philosophy of non-interventionist winemaking to let these distinct terroirs shine. The fruit was fermented using native yeasts and the final wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered, preserving its natural texture and complexity. To integrate its powerful mountain structure, the wine was aged for 20 months in 75% new French oak barrels. The estate employs sustainable farming practices, meticulously managing the canopy to protect the grapes during the heat spikes of the season.
For pairings, this structured Cabernet demands rich, protein-forward American classics. It pairs beautifully with a char-grilled ribeye steak topped with a rosemary-garlic butter; the wine's bold tannins cut through the marbling while echoing the char of the meat. Alternatively, try it with a smoked beef brisket, where the wine's savory, earthy notes will complement the spice rub and smoke ring perfectly. For a more casual yet decadent option, a high-quality aged cheddar cheeseburger with bacon makes for a fantastic match, highlighting the wine's fruit against the sharp cheese.
Critics have lauded this vintage for its over-delivery on quality relative to price, with Jeb Dunnuck and James Suckling both awarding it 93 points, and Vinous scoring it 91 points. It remains one of the smartest buys in the luxury Napa Cabernet category, offering the pedigree of mountain fruit at a competitive price point.
