Description
Meadowcroft “Stags Leap District” Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
This exclusive release stands as a pure expression of its provenance, composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. With a total production of only 169 cases, this wine eschews blending to showcase the singular voice of the varietal within one of Napa Valley's most revered neighborhoods.
The 2022 vintage presented a dramatic growing season, characterized by a mild start that culminated in a significant heatwave during September. Despite these conditions, the Stags Leap District AVA mitigated the heat through its unique geography; the iconic rocky Palisades radiate retained heat during the day, while cooling breezes from the San Pablo Bay sweep in at night to preserve natural acidity. This distinct diurnal shift, combined with the region's signature volcanic and gravelly loam soils, allowed the grapes to achieve optimal ripeness while maintaining structural elegance.
Visually, the wine displays a deep, brooding ruby color that suggests significant concentration. The nose opens with a complex bouquet of vibrant fruit, including ripe black cherry, pomegranate, and strawberry, intricately layered with savory notes of black olive, peppercorn, and a touch of earthy minerality. On the palate, this is a dry, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon that delivers a rich core of sweet cherry, boysenberry, and Amarena cherry. The texture is supported by smooth, well-integrated tannins and a backbone of vibrant acidity that keeps the palate lively. The finish is lush and persistent, offering lingering hints of vanilla, cinnamon, and white pepper.
Winemaker Tom Meadowcroft employs a philosophy of "four-wheel-drive farming," a hands-on, sustainable approach that emphasizes meticulous vineyard care to ensure only the highest quality fruit is harvested. This belief that great wine is grown rather than made is evident in the wine's purity. Following fermentation, the wine underwent a lengthy aging period to harmonize its components and was finally bottled in December 2024.
For food pairings, this wine aligns perfectly with classic American fare. It serves as a stellar match for a grilled ribeye steak, where the wine's structured tannins slice through the richness of the fat and char. For a more elegant option, pair it with roasted duck breast topped with a cherry glaze, which will complement the wine's red fruit profile and savory undertones. While major critical scores for this specific vintage are currently pending, the prestigious Stags Leap pedigree and Meadowcroft's small-lot craftsmanship offer a compelling experience that rivals more expensive bottlings from this celebrated terroir.
