Description
Meadowcroft Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 2023
This expressive 100% Pinot Noir captures the essence of the Anderson Valley, sourced primarily from a coveted vineyard site located just north of Boonville. The 2023 vintage was defined by a long, cool growing season initiated by significant winter rainfall, allowing for extended hangtime that developed deep flavor complexity while preserving the region's signature vibrancy. Influenced by the valley's rolling hills and dramatic diurnal temperature shifts, the grapes ripened slowly to achieve a perfect balance of lush fruit and structural elegance.
In the glass, the wine displays a brilliant ruby red hue with medium intensity. The nose offers an inviting, complex bouquet of maraschino cherry, vanilla cream, and red roses, layered with intriguing nuances of kola nut, nutmeg, and cinnamon spice. On the palate, this medium-bodied, dry wine delivers a silky texture and a core of dark fruit flavors, including ripe cranberry, wild strawberry, and tart cherry. Vibrant acidity lifts the fruit profile, leading to a long, supple finish framed by smooth, polished tannins.
Winemaker Tom Meadowcroft employs sustainable farming practices, viewing himself as a steward of the land to ensure the vineyard's character shines through in the final bottling. This limited-production release of approximately 25 barrels was aged in 30% new French and American oak, a regimen that contributes a subtle, creamy vanilla note without masking the delicate varietal fruit. For food pairings, this Pinot Noir shines alongside cedar plank grilled salmon, where the acidity cuts through the fish's richness, or a roasted duck breast with cherry compote to echo the wine's fruit profile. It is also an excellent match for a gourmet wood-fired pizza topped with mushrooms and prosciutto. Validating its quality, this vintage was awarded an impressive 94 points by Wine Enthusiast, offering the sophistication of a much pricier bottle at a remarkable value.
