Description
Mas Amiel Vintage Rouge Maury 2023
This exceptional Vin Doux Naturel is a pure expression of the Roussillon region, crafted from 100% Grenache Noir. The fruit is sourced from the estate's biodynamically farmed vineyards in the Maury AOC, specifically from parcels with schist-rich soils and black marl. These heat-retaining, stony soils are crucial for achieving the optimal ripeness required for this style of fortified wine, allowing the Grenache to develop profound concentration while maintaining the variety's hallmark fruit character.
The 2023 vintage in Roussillon was characterized by a warm, dry summer that facilitated excellent phenolic maturity. Despite the heat, the harvest—conducted manually between late September and mid-October—yielded grapes with a remarkable balance of sugar and natural acidity. The unique terroir of the Agly Valley, combined with the estate's meticulous biodynamic practices, ensured that the vines remained resilient, producing fruit that captures the solar intensity of the year without sacrificing freshness.
In the glass, the wine displays a striking, deep ruby hue with intense purple reflections, indicating its youth and concentration. The viscosity is high, coating the glass with slow-moving tears. The nose is an explosive bouquet of primary black fruits, dominated by freshly crushed blackberries, crème de cassis, and Burlat cherries. As it opens, complex secondary aromas emerge, offering notes of gingerbread, sweet licorice, wild scrubland herbs (garrigue), and a hint of dark cocoa. It is devoid of the oxidative, nutty notes found in aged Maury, instead showcasing the pristine, vibrant fruit of the harvest.
On the palate, this wine is full-bodied and decidedly sweet, yet it possesses a surprising agility. The texture is velvety and luscious, coating the mouth with flavors of blueberry compote, fig, and dark chocolate. The sweetness is expertly counterbalanced by a spine of acidity and fine-grained tannins, preventing any sensation of cloying heaviness. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a refreshing trail of red fruit and subtle slate-like minerality.
Mas Amiel is a pioneer in biodynamic viticulture, holding both organic and Biodyvin certifications. The winemaking process for the "Vintage" cuvée is designed to capture the fruit's primary energy. After a double manual sorting and destemming, the grapes undergo fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks. The key technique here is "mutage sur grains," where neutral alcohol is added directly to the must during fermentation to stop yeast activity, thereby retaining natural grape sugars. The wine is then macerated for 15 to 20 days before being aged for 10 months in a reductive environment—typically topped-up vats or casks—to protect it from oxygen and preserve its fresh, fruity profile.
This wine's intense fruit and sweetness make it a versatile companion for rich dishes. It pairs beautifully with a dark chocolate flourless cake or a ganache tart, where the wine's berry notes cut through the bitterness of the cocoa. For a savory American-leaning option, try it with slow-roasted duck breast with a cherry reduction; the wine's tannins and acidity will cleanse the palate of the rich fat. It also serves as a classic partner for pungent blue cheeses like Stilton or a domestic Rogue River Blue.
The 2023 vintage has been well-received by critics, with Andreas Larsson awarding it a score of 92/100, praising its "beautiful balance between sugar, acidity, and alcohol." It represents outstanding value in the world of fortified wines, offering a level of complexity and farming integrity often found in much more expensive bottles.
