Description
Mas Amiel Vintage Rouge Maury 2020
This exceptional Vin Doux Naturel is a single-varietal expression crafted from 100% Grenache Noir. The fruit is sourced from the estate's historic plots in the Maury appellation of the Roussillon, specifically the "Devèze" parcels where vines aged 15 to 35 years root deeply into the region's signature decomposed black schist and calcschist soils. These distinct soils, which absorb heat during the day and release it at night, are crucial for achieving the optimal ripeness required for this style. The 2020 vintage was marked by a challenging, soggy spring followed by a hot, dry summer that naturally concentrated the berries, resulting in lower yields of exceptionally aromatic and structured fruit. This vintage is particularly notable as it marks Mas Amiel's official certification in biodynamic farming (Biodyvin), reflecting a philosophy that prioritizes soil health and planetary rhythms to express the purest terroir.
In the glass, the wine pours a profound, opaque ruby with vibrant violet highlights, displaying significant viscosity that coats the sides of the glass. The nose is an intense, hedonistic bouquet of ripe Burlat cherry, crushed blackberries, and fresh figs, interwoven with complex layers of dark cocoa powder, licorice, and the scrubland herbs known as garrigue. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, sweet wine that defies heaviness through a striking balance of acidity and mineral tension derived from the schist soils. The texture is velvety and plush, delivering waves of raspberry coulis and bitter chocolate, supported by tannins that are present yet remarkably silky. The finish is persistent and fruit-forward, avoiding the cloying sensation often associated with dessert wines, instead leaving a clean, refreshing impression of dark fruit and slate.
Winemaking at Mas Amiel is a precise art designed to capture the freshness of the fruit. Following a manual harvest and double sorting, the grapes are destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled concrete and stainless steel vats. The key technique here is mutage sur grains, where neutral grape spirit is added directly to the tank during fermentation to arrest yeast activity while the juice is still on the skins. This preserves the natural grape sugars and extracts intense color and aromatics during a subsequent 20-day maceration. Unlike the estate's oxidative "Maury" wines which age for decades in glass demijohns or oak, the "Vintage" rouge is aged for 10 months in airtight vats to protect it from oxygen, bottling it early to maintain its explosive primary fruit character.
While this wine is a classic partner for dessert, its structure allows for versatile pairing. It is a stunning match for a molten chocolate lava cake with a raspberry reduction, as the wine's cocoa notes and acidity cut through the richness of the fondant. For a distinctly American savory pairing, serve this with slow-smoked BBQ beef ribs glazed in a blackberry-chipotle sauce; the wine's sweetness complements the char and smoke while its tannins handle the rendered fat. Alternatively, try it with a blue cheese burger topped with caramelized onions, where the salty pungency of the cheese creates a dynamic contrast with the wine's lush fruit.
Critics have praised the 2020 vintage for its purity and balance, with aggregate scores hovering around 89-91 points. Given its complexity and the labor-intensive biodynamic farming involved, it represents outstanding value in the world of fortified wines, offering a sophisticated alternative to Ruby Port at a very accessible price point.
