Description
Mas Amiel, Vintage Blanc, Maury 2023
This exquisite Vin Doux Naturel is a single-varietal expression crafted from 100% Grenache Gris. The fruit is sourced from the estate's venerable parcels, where vines range between 60 and 75 years of age, ensuring exceptional concentration and depth. Situated in the Agly Valley of the Roussillon region, these low-yielding vines are deeply rooted in the area's distinctive terroir, producing a wine that defies the heavy stereotypes often associated with fortified wines.
The 2023 vintage in Roussillon was defined by extreme conditions, marked by a severe drought and a "solar" growing season that resulted in historically low yields. Despite the heat, the specific microclimate of Mas Amiel—aided by cool nights and the moderating influence of the Tramontane wind—allowed the grapes to retain vital acidity. The terroir is dominated by decomposed schist and black marl facing south, a soil composition that absorbs heat during the day and releases it at night, while imparting a signature mineral tension that cuts through the wine's natural richness.
In the glass, the wine presents a luminous, pale golden hue with brilliant platinum reflections. The nose is intensely aromatic and precise, opening with vibrant notes of ruby red grapefruit, white peach, and blooming cistus flowers, underpinned by a distinct aroma of warm, sun-baked slate. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, sweet wine that miraculously retains a sensation of lightness; the texture is luscious and coating but lifted by a backbone of electric acidity. Flavors of crystallized mandarin, fresh pear, and wild honey evolve into a long, saline finish that speaks clearly of its schist origins.
Mas Amiel is a pioneer in sustainable viticulture, farming its 150 hectares with certified Organic and Biodynamic practices (Biodyvin). For this cuvée, grapes are hand-harvested and undergo a double sorting process before direct pressing. The winemaking style is "reductive," meaning it is designed to protect the fruit from oxidation—a sharp contrast to the oxidative "rancio" styles of the region. The fermentation is stopped midway by the addition of neutral alcohol (mutage sur jus) to preserve the natural grape sugars, followed by 10 months of aging in stainless steel tanks to lock in freshness and primary fruit aromatics.
While traditionally paired with foie gras or fruit tarts, this wine shines with American-leaning cuisine that plays on sweet and savory contrasts. It pairs beautifully with a Southern-style peach cobbler, where the wine's stone fruit notes echo the dessert while its acidity cuts through the buttery crust. For a savory option, try it with spicy glazed pork belly or St. Louis-style ribs; the wine's sweetness cools the heat of the rub while complementing the caramelized fat. It also serves as an excellent partner for a board of American artisanal blue cheeses, such as Rogue River Blue.
While specific major critic scores for the 2023 release are still pending, the estate is widely regarded as the benchmark for the Maury appellation, with previous vintages consistently scoring in the 90-93 point range from advocates like Robert Parker and Decanter. Given its pedigree, biodynamic farming, and the labor-intensive production, it represents remarkable value in the world of fine dessert wines.
