Description
Mas Amiel, Oiseau Rare, Maury sec AOC 2020
This vibrant red is a meticulously crafted blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Carignan, sourced from the estate's historic vineyards in the Agly Valley. The vines are rooted in the region's signature black calcoschist soils, a terroir that imparts distinct minerality and tension to the final wine. The 2020 vintage in Roussillon was characterized by a wet spring followed by a hot, dry summer, creating a condensed harvest window that yielded fruit with exceptional concentration yet remarkable freshness. This balance allowed Mas Amiel to produce a wine that defies the traditional heaviness often associated with the region, offering instead a profile of elegance and digestibility.
In the glass, the wine displays a brilliant, translucent ruby hue with violet highlights, indicative of its fresh, un-oaked style. The nose is an expressive whirlwind of primary fruit and terroir-driven complexity, led by aromas of wild raspberries, crushed strawberries, and dark plums. These fruit notes are beautifully interwoven with secondary scents of dried garrigue herbs, rose petals, and a distinct graphite minerality derived from the schist soils. On the palate, this wine is dry and medium-bodied, defined by a silky texture and vibrant acidity that provides lift and energy. The flavors mirror the nose, with juicy red berry fruit taking center stage, supported by fine-grained tannins that offer a gentle, structural grip rather than aggression. The finish is long, saline, and refreshing, leaving a lingering impression of wild herbs and crushed stone.
Mas Amiel is a pioneer in the region, and the 2020 vintage marks a significant milestone as the estate officially achieved biodynamic certification (Biodyvin). The farming philosophy views the vineyard as a living ecosystem, utilizing natural preparations to enhance soil health and vine resilience. In the cellar, the winemaking approach is intentionally hands-off to preserve the purity of the fruit ("Oiseau Rare" translates to "Rare Bird," symbolizing this unique fresh style). The grapes are hand-harvested, double-sorted, and destemmed before undergoing fermentation with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel vats. Aging takes place in concrete tanks rather than oak barrels, a choice that protects the wine's aromatic integrity and emphasizes the crisp, fruit-forward character of the Grenache.
With its bright acidity and savory undertones, this wine is exceptionally food-friendly and pairs effortlessly with American comfort classics. It is a stunning match for a gourmet bacon cheeseburger on a brioche bun, where the wine's fresh acidity cuts through the richness of the cheese and fat while highlighting the savory beef. Alternatively, try it with smoked baby back ribs slathered in a tangy BBQ sauce; the Grenache's juicy fruit profile complements the sweetness of the sauce, while the herbal notes echo the smoke. For a more elevated option, grilled lamb chops with a rosemary rub would perfectly accentuate the wine's garrigue character.
Critics have taken note of this cuvée's quality, with Tim Atkin MW awarding it 92 points and James Suckling scoring it 93 points. Given its pedigree, biodynamic farming, and the renown of the producer, it represents fantastic value in the world of French reds, offering a level of complexity often found in wines twice the price.
