Description
Mas Amiel, Natural Syrah, Cotes de Catalanes IGP 2022
This vibrant, expressive red is a pure varietal showcase, crafted from 100% Syrah grapes grown in the rugged terroir of the Roussillon. Sourced specifically from the "La Devèze" locality, the vines are rooted in stony, calcareous-schist soils that function much like sand, offering exceptional drainage and forcing deep root penetration. The 2022 vintage in this region was characterized by warm, dry conditions, resulting in fruit of remarkable concentration and purity. Despite the heat, the specific vineyard orientation and the mineral-rich soils helped preserve a crucial freshness and tension in the final wine, preventing it from becoming over-ripe or heavy.
In the glass, the wine pours a deep, opaque dark red with striking purplish reflections that hint at its youthful energy. The nose is highly precise and evolving; it opens with intriguing notes of woodsmoke and crushed rocks, which quickly part to reveal a fragrant bouquet of peony, ripe blackberry, and black cherry. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, dry wine defined by its "crunchy" fruit profile and silky texture. It avoids the heaviness often associated with warm-climate Syrah, instead offering a juicy mouthfeel with flavors of dark plums, cracked black peppercorns, and a subtle "creamy" mid-palate weight. The finish is notably long and marked by a refreshing, distinct salinity—a hallmark of the schist soils—that leaves the palate clean and invigorated.
Mas Amiel is a historic estate deeply committed to environmental stewardship, holding both organic and biodynamic certifications (Biodyvin). For the "Natural" range, the winemaking philosophy is strictly hands-off to allow the terroir to speak clearly. The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo a gentle infusion-style fermentation in stainless steel vats using only native yeasts. Crucially, this wine is produced with zero added sulfites (sans soufre) at any stage, including bottling. Aging takes place in concrete vats to preserve the fruit's brightness and texture without the influence of oak.
This wine's fresh acidity and savory undertones make it a versatile companion at the dinner table. It pairs exceptionally well with grilled duck breast served with a berry reduction, as the fruit notes in the wine echo the sauce while the acidity cuts through the richness of the meat. For a more casual American pairing, try it with a grilled lamb burger topped with crumbled feta and rosemary aioli; the wine's smoky nuances and saline finish perfectly complement the char of the meat and the saltiness of the cheese. It would also stand up beautifully to a classic Carolina-style pulled pork sandwich, where the pepper notes would harmonize with the spice rub.
Critics have praised this vintage for its purity and drinkability, with James Suckling awarding it 90 points, describing it as "juicy, transparent and crunchy" with notes of hot stones. Decanter also awarded it 90 points, highlighting its intense floral nose and harmonious structure. Given its pedigree, biodynamic certification, and the labor-intensive natural winemaking process, it represents excellent value in the world of natural wines, offering a clean, fault-free experience that remains accessible to a wide range of palates.
