Description
Mary Taylor 2022 Abymes Savoie Blanc
This pristine alpine wine represents a pure, unadulterated expression of 100% Jacquère, the indigenous white grape responsible for the crisp identity of the Savoie region. The fruit is sourced exclusively from the Abymes appellation, a unique terroir situated on the chaotic clay-limestone scree soils formed by the massive Mont Granier landslide of 1248. The 2022 vintage presented a study in resilience; while a hot, dry summer and localized hail reduced yields, the surviving grapes achieved remarkable concentration. Despite the solar intensity of the season, the region's elevation allowed the fruit to retain the electric acidity essential to the varietal's character.
In the glass, the wine displays a shimmering pale straw hue with delicate, translucent green reflections that hint at its vibrancy. The nose is expressive and high-toned, offering a bouquet of white wildflowers, crisp Granny Smith apple, and underripe white peach, all anchored by a profound aroma of crushed wet stone and flint. On the palate, this wine is distinctly light-bodied and bone dry, driven by a racy, mouth-watering acidity that acts as a nervous system for the wine. Flavors of lime zest, honeysuckle, and fresh alpine herbs wash across the tongue, resolving in a finish that is saline, mineral-driven, and incredibly refreshing.
Produced by partner grower Benjamin Ravier, this wine is the result of rigorous sustainable farming practices under the HVE 3 certification (High Environmental Value). The winemaking philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention to preserve the grape's natural tension; the fruit is hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. To maintain the wine's signature snap and freshness, malolactic fermentation is blocked, and the wine rests on its fine lees for three months to add a whisper of textural weight. This commitment to quality has earned the bottling recognition, including a score of 90 points from Wine Enthusiast, highlighting its status as an exceptional value.
While often paired with Swiss-style cheeses, this wine's piercing acidity makes it a brilliant companion for American seafood dishes. It pairs beautifully with fried oysters or a classic shrimp po'boy, where the wine's zesty profile cuts through the richness of the batter and remoulade. Alternatively, serve this with pan-seared rainbow trout with lemon-dill butter to highlight the fresh, river-fish flavors, or a tart goat cheese and arugula salad.
