Lightwell Survey: Electric Juice Box 2025
The 2025 Electric Juice Box is a vibrant, unconventional rosé blend consisting of 65% Vidal Blanc, 23% Chambourcin, 9% Petit Manseng, 2% Valvin Muscat, and 1% Traminette. Sourced from the Shenandoah Valley AVA in Virginia, the fruit is grown on stony limestone and granite soils at higher, cooler mountain elevations that beautifully mitigate the region's typically warm and humid growing season to preserve crucial acidity. In the glass, the wine presents a striking, slightly hazy light cranberry hue due to its unfiltered nature. The nose is highly aromatic and exuberant, bursting with primary notes of tart cranberry, zesty grapefruit, and ripe orchard fruits, underpinned by secondary hints of dried wild herbs and crushed chalk. On the palate, this light-bodied and bone-dry wine delivers an instant, unsweetened cranberry blast alongside juicy watermelon and tart citrus flavors. Despite its refreshing acidity, a full malolactic fermentation imparts a surprisingly creamy texture and depth, leading to a crisp, mouthwatering finish. Winemakers Ben Jordan and Sebastian Zutant champion a low-intervention farming and production philosophy, utilizing native yeast fermentations, avoiding fining or filtration, and bottling with minimal sulfur to craft this provocative, négoce-style wine. For food pairings, this wine shines alongside grilled shrimp tacos with a chili-lime crema, where its zippy acidity easily cuts through the heat and fat. It also pairs exceptionally well with a classic American charcuterie board featuring cured country ham and pickled mustard seeds, or a refreshing summer watermelon and feta salad. While major critic scores from publications like the Wine Advocate or Wine Spectator are currently unavailable for this small-production cuvée, its retail price of under $30 makes it an incredibly affordable and high-value exploration of modern Virginia terroir.
