Description
Lievland Vineyards, Pinotage 2023
This vibrant, modern expression of South Africa’s signature grape is a blend of 93% Pinotage and 7% Grenache. The fruit is sourced from two distinct, dry-farmed bush vine vineyards in the Agter-Paarl region, with vines aged over 20 years. One site features decomposed granite soils that contribute structure and aromatic lift, while the other sits on shale, which aids in water retention and lends the wine its concentrated fruit core and elegant tannins.
The 2023 vintage in the Western Cape was defined by a cooler growing season and significant rainfall, resulting in a harvest that favored elegance and fresh acidity over raw power. In the glass, the wine displays a deep ruby-garnet hue with youthful purple reflections. The nose is expressive and complex, offering primary aromas of dark cherry, fresh raspberry, and ripe plum, layered with intriguing notes of espresso, crushed violets, and a hint of cedar from oak maturation. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, dry wine that balances rich red fruit flavors with a distinct savory, earthy character often described as “fynbos” or dried herbs. The texture is polished and approachable, featuring soft, well-managed tannins and a bright streak of acidity that leads to a lingering, spicy finish.
Lievland Vineyards is committed to sustainable farming and is a certified member of the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) scheme. For this bottling, winemaker Riaan Möller employed a gentle extraction philosophy to avoid the harshness sometimes associated with the varietal. The grapes underwent a two-day cold maceration before fermentation, with regular pump-overs to extract color and flavor. Crucially, the wine was separated from the skins immediately after fermentation to maintain a soft profile. It was then matured for approximately 13 to 16 months in French oak barrels, utilizing a mix of 10-15% new wood and older vessels to impart subtle vanilla spice without overpowering the fruit.
This Pinotage is exceptionally food-friendly and pairs perfectly with American barbecue classics. Try it with a smoky, dry-rubbed beef brisket, where the wine’s savory espresso notes will echo the char of the meat. Alternatively, it serves as an excellent companion to a grilled lamb burger topped with gruyère and caramelized onions, as the bright acidity cuts through the richness of the lamb. For a vegetarian option, roasted portobello mushrooms with a balsamic glaze would highlight the wine’s earthier tones.
Critics have praised this vintage for its refined style and exceptional value. The Tasting Panel awarded it 93 points, highlighting its “black raspberry soaked in espresso” character, while Gilbert & Gaillard gave it 91 points. It represents a standout value in its class, offering the complexity of a serious red wine at an accessible price point.
