Description
Lievland Vineyards, Liefkoos Rosé – 2024
This 2024 vintage is a sophisticated, meticulously crafted blend of 67% Syrah, 25% Mourvèdre, and 8% Cinsault. The fruit is sourced from intentionally cultivated vineyard blocks situated on the north-westerly slopes of the iconic Simonsberg mountains in the Stellenbosch region. This specific terroir is celebrated for producing South Africa's finest wines, with the Syrah contributing juicy red fruit, the Mourvèdre adding floral elegance and structure, and the Cinsault providing a vibrant, spicy lift. The name "Liefkoos" translates to "caress" in Afrikaans, indicative of the wine's gentle yet structured profile.
The 2024 growing season in Stellenbosch was characterized by significant climatic variation. Following a rainy start to the season, the region experienced a warm and dry summer punctuated by heatwaves. These conditions required the vines to struggle slightly, resulting in a naturally smaller crop yield. However, this lower yield produced berries of exceptional concentration and intense flavor, ensuring the final wine possesses fantastic ripeness and distinct varietal character.
In the glass, the wine exhibits a stunningly pale salmon hue, reminiscent of a classic Provence-style Rosé. The nose offers an inviting, aromatic bouquet of pomegranate, fresh cranberry, and red currant. On the palate, this is a dry, light-bodied wine that balances refreshing acidity with a rich flavor profile. Notes of zesty citrus peel, lively raspberry, and a hint of glazed cherry dance across the tongue. Extended time on the lees has imparted a wonderfully smooth texture, adding weight to the mid-palate before resolving in a crisp, lingering finish.
Winemaker Riaan Möller and the team at Lievland utilize a philosophy that blends traditional methods with a fresh, modern approach. The grapes were hand-picked in the cool early mornings to preserve their delicate aromas and acidity. The juice saw only minimal skin contact to achieve the delicate color without extracting harsh phenolics. The winery is dedicated to sustainable practices; this wine is certified by Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) and is vegan-friendly.
This Rosé is highly versatile at the dinner table. It pairs beautifully with a grilled chicken salad with a strawberry vinaigrette, as the wine's red fruit notes echo the dressing while the acidity cuts through the char of the meat. It is also an excellent match for spicy shrimp tacos, where the crisp freshness complements the seafood and balances the heat of the spices.
While specific scores for the 2024 vintage are pending release, this label is a perennial overachiever in its category. It is a three-time winner of Tim Atkin MW's 'Rosé of the Year' award, and the preceding 2023 vintage scored an impressive 93 points. Given this pedigree, the wine offers incredible value and quality relative to its price point.
