Description
Lievland Vineyards, Liefkoos Rosé 2023
This wine is a meticulously crafted blend that pays homage to the elegant styles of Provence while showcasing South African terroir. It is composed of 51% Syrah, 33% Mourvèdre, and 16% Cinsault. The name "Liefkoos" translates to "to caress" in Afrikaans, a fitting title for a wine designed to be gentle and inviting, hailing from Lievland, or "Love Land." The 2023 vintage in Stellenbosch was characterized by a wet winter and a cooler ripening season, allowing the grapes to retain vibrant acidity and develop complex aromatics without excessive sugar accumulation. Sourced from the northwestern slopes of the Simonsberg mountain, the vines are rooted in ancient, decomposed granite and shale soils—specifically Clovelly, Oakleaf, and Klapmuts formations—which impart a distinctive mineral backbone to the wine.
In the glass, the Liefkoos Rosé presents a delicate, crystalline pale salmon color. The nose is expressive and floral, offering a bouquet of fresh rose petals, hibiscus, and crushed pomegranate, layered with notes of wild strawberry and a hint of pear drop esters. On the palate, this light-bodied wine is impeccably dry, boasting a refreshing tension and purity. Flavors of crisp watermelon, red currant, and glazed cherry dance across the tongue, supported by a zest of citrus peel and a savory, saline undertone that speaks to its coastal influences. The texture is polished and smooth, a result of extended lees contact, leading to a finish that is long, mouth-watering, and precise.
The farming and winemaking behind this rosé reflect a commitment to quality and sustainability. Lievland is IPW Certified (Integrated Production of Wine), focusing on environmentally friendly practices. For this vintage, grapes were hand-harvested in the cool early morning hours to preserve freshness. In the cellar, the fruit underwent direct pressing with minimal skin contact to achieve the pale hue. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks at cool temperatures (12-16°C) to lock in primary fruit esters, followed by extended time on the lees to build mouthfeel and complexity without adding weight.
This wine’s high acidity and savory complexity make it an excellent companion for food. It pairs beautifully with a grilled shrimp po' boy with spicy remoulade; the wine's crisp acidity cuts through the fried texture and creamy sauce while highlighting the sweetness of the shrimp. Alternatively, try it with a barbecued chicken flatbread topped with goat cheese and arugula, where the wine's red fruit notes complement the tangy BBQ sauce and the herbal greens. This vintage has received significant acclaim, earning 93 points and the title of "Rosé of the Year" from Master of Wine Tim Atkin, confirming its status as a benchmark for South African rosé and an incredible value in its category.
