Description
Les Equilibristes Picpoul de Pinet – 2024
This wine is a focused expression of 100% Picpoul Blanc, the sole varietal permitted within the coastal Picpoul de Pinet AOP of France's Languedoc region. The 2024 vintage was characterized by warm and dry conditions, allowing the fruit to achieve optimal ripeness while necessitating an early September harvest to preserve the grape's hallmark tension. The vines are rooted in a mosaic of clay and limestone soils situated near the Etang de Thau; this proximity to the saltwater lagoon provides a crucial maritime influence, moderating the Mediterranean heat and imparting a distinct saline minerality that defines the terroir.
In the glass, the wine presents a pristine, pale straw color with brilliant clarity and youthful green reflections. The nose opens with an energetic surge of Meyer lemon, tart green apple, and white grapefruit zest, layered with delicate nuances of acacia flowers and a distinct note of crushed oyster shell. On the palate, this is a dry, light-bodied white that lives up to its name—which translates to "lip stinger"—with vibrant, zesty acidity. However, the texture is surprisingly polished, showing a subtle creaminess and weight from lees contact that balances the sharp citrus profile. The finish is clean, lingering, and marked by a refreshing sensation of sea spray and wet stone.
Les Equilibristes ("The Tightrope Walkers") is a project driven by a philosophy of "gastronomic" winemaking, partnering with growers who utilize organic and biodynamic farming practices. To preserve freshness and prevent oxidation, the grapes for this cuvée were harvested at night. Fermentation occurred spontaneously with native yeasts in stainless steel tanks, avoiding oak entirely to maintain varietal purity. The wine was then aged on its fine lees for several months, a technique that adds structural complexity and mouthfeel to what is typically a simple bistro wine.
The wine's electric acidity and saline character make it a versatile partner for American seafood dishes. It pairs exceptionally well with grilled shrimp tacos topped with a lime crema, where the wine's crispness cuts through the richness of the sauce and char. Alternatively, try it with a classic New England lobster roll; the bright citrus notes lift the sweetness of the lobster meat while scrubbing the palate of the butter or mayonnaise. As the 2024 vintage has only recently been released, formal scores from major critics are not yet available. However, given the producer's rigorous standards and sustainable farming, it stands out as a high-quality, character-driven example of the appellation.
