Description
Le Pianelle Rosato Magnum 2023
This commanding "Al Posto dei Fiori" rosé defies expectations, presenting a serious, structured profile in a festive magnum format. The 2023 blend is meticulously crafted from 95% Nebbiolo, 3% Vespolina, and 2% Croatina, highlighting the noble viticulture of Alto Piemonte. The vintage was marked by a dramatic growing season with a wet spring and scorching summer, yet a cool lead-up to the October harvest preserved crucial acidity. Sourced from the Coste della Sesia DOC, the vines are rooted in acidic volcanic porphyry and ancient marine sands at elevations up to 380 meters, imparting a signature mineral tension.
Visually, the wine pours a stunning deep salmon-pink with a shimmering blush-red core and brilliant clarity. The nose is an enchanting bouquet of ripe red cherry, wild strawberry, and orange oil, layered with hints of almond, crushed violets, and sweet flowers. On the palate, it is dry and medium-bodied, boasting an electrifying energy that one critic likened to a "jet ski" zipping across the tongue. Vivid berry fruit flavors mingle with salty minerality and crushed seashell notes, concluding with a long, savory, and zesty finish.
Le Pianelle utilizes practicing organic farming to maintain the integrity of their unique terroir. Winemaking involves a split approach: Nebbiolo is gently pressed after a brief cold soak, while the Vespolina and Croatina are "bled" off via the saignée method, with 95% fermented in stainless steel and the remainder in used oak for added complexity. This rosé pairs exceptionally well with American favorites such as a spicy shrimp boil, where its crisp acidity cuts through the heat, or cedar-plank grilled salmon to complement the smoky richness. It also shines alongside a classic roast chicken with herbs. Garnering a massive 93 points from Vinous, which called it "flat-out delicious," this wine offers incredible value and complexity compared to top-tier Provençal peers.
