Description
La Despensa Boutique, Pool Blend 2024
This distinctively refreshing red wine is a unique field blend composed primarily of 75% Cinsault and 15% PaĆs, co-mingled with 5% Marsanne and 5% Roussanne. The inclusion of white RhĆ“ne varieties is a signature touch by winemaker Matt Ridgway, designed to lift the aromatics and add textural complexity to the red fruit base. The Cinsault and white varieties are sourced from the winery's own organically farmed vineyard in Santa Ana, while the PaĆs comes from heritage vines estimated to be over 150 years old in the Pumanque area of the Colchagua Valley.
The 2024 vintage in Colchagua was characterized by a cooler-than-average growing season, allowing for slow, even ripening that preserved electric natural acidityāa critical component for this "vin de soif" style. The Santa Ana vineyard features granitic clay soils that lend a mineral backbone to the fruit, while the ancient dry-farmed PaĆs vines contribute depth and earthiness. This terroir, combined with the moderate vintage conditions, has produced a wine of exceptional vibrancy and lower alcohol, perfectly embodying the "Pool Blend" concept of drinkability and freshness.
In the glass, the wine presents a translucent, shimmering ruby hue with violet highlights, indicative of its lighter extraction. The nose is expressive and high-toned, bursting with aromas of wild strawberries, crunchy raspberries, and pomegranate seeds. Secondary notes of dried herbs and white pepper emerge, interwoven with a subtle apricot or white peach nuance contributed by the Marsanne and Roussanne. On the palate, this wine is light-to-medium-bodied and dry, though the ripe fruit character gives an impression of sweet berry juice. The texture is silky with very soft, fine-grained tannins, driven by a zesty acidity that provides a mouth-watering finish. It is a "glou-glou" style wineāenergetic, unpretentious, and incredibly pure.
La Despensa operates with a philosophy of "human-scale" winemaking, utilizing sustainable and organic farming practices (though uncertified) and 100% solar power. For this cuvƩe, grapes are hand-harvested and destemmed, often with the crusher removed to allow for whole-berry fermentation, enhancing fruitiness. Fermentation occurs with native yeasts in open-top bins or concrete tanks. The wine is aged primarily in breathable Flextanks (polyethylene eggs) to preserve the primary fruit characteristics without the masking influence of new oak, though a small portion may see neutral barrels. The wine is bottled unfined and lightly filtered to maintain its raw energy.
True to its name, this wine is best enjoyed slightly chilled and pairs effortlessly with casual, warm-weather fare. It is an excellent match for grilled turkey burgers with cranberry relish, as the acidity cuts through the poultry while complementing the fruit condiments. Alternatively, pair it with a classic American BBQ pulled pork sandwich; the wine's low tannins won't clash with the spice, and its red fruit profile balances the sweetness of the barbecue sauce. It also serves as a versatile partner for a charcuterie board featuring salty prosciutto and soft cheeses.
While specific ratings for the 2024 vintage are pending, previous releases of the Pool Blend have garnered 90 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, praised for their "unusual blend" and "fruit-driven" nature. Given its boutique production and hand-crafted pedigree, it represents exceptional value in the category of artisanal Chilean wines, offering a serious yet playful alternative to heavier Colchagua reds.
