Description
La Despensa Boutique, Field Blend 2021
This vibrant and expressive red wine is a fascinating, co-fermented assemblage of 45% Grenache, 35% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre, and 5% Roussanne. Sourced entirely from the producer's organically farmed estate vineyard in the Santa Ana sub-zone of the Colchagua Valley, this unique blend showcases the potential for Mediterranean varieties in Chile. The inclusion of Roussanne, a white grape, is a traditional Rhône Valley technique used here to fix color and add textural complexity to the final wine.
The 2021 vintage in Colchagua was characterized by a cooler growing season compared to the warm, dry conditions of the previous year. This climatological shift allowed for a slow, steady ripening process that preserved natural acidity and fresh fruit aromatics. The vineyard soils in Santa Ana are typically granitic, contributing a distinct mineral backbone to the wine. The cooler temperatures of the vintage have resulted in a wine that emphasizes elegance and tension over sheer power, capturing the energetic spirit of this specific terroir.
In the glass, the wine displays a bright, translucent ruby hue with violet reflections, indicating its freshness and lack of heavy extraction. The nose is vivid and aromatic, bursting with primary notes of crushed raspberries, wild strawberries, and pomegranate. As it opens, complex secondary aromas emerge, offering layers of dried Mediterranean herbs, bay leaf, graphite, and a subtle floral lift of crushed violets. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, dry wine defined by its juicy acidity and fine-grained, chalky tannins. The texture is silky yet firm, with the Roussanne contributing a subtle fleshiness to the mid-palate that balances the structural grip. The finish is long, clean, and refreshing, devoid of heavy oak influence, allowing the pure fruit and mineral notes to linger.
Winemaker Matt Ridgway, an Englishman transplanted to Chile, champions a low-intervention philosophy that highlights the fruit's purity. The farming is strictly organic, focusing on biodiversity and soil health. For this Field Blend, the grapes were harvested and co-fermented together using only native yeasts, a practice that encourages the integration of flavors from the very beginning of the process. The wine was then aged for approximately 10 months in homemade, unlined concrete tanks. This vessel choice is deliberate, avoiding the flavor masking of new oak and allowing the wine to breathe and evolve while maintaining its vibrant energy and textural precision.
This fresh and structured red pairs exceptionally well with American bistro-style cuisine. It would be a perfect match for a grilled bison burger topped with caramelized onions and gruyère, where the wine's acidity cuts through the richness of the meat while its herbal notes complement the savory toppings. Alternatively, try it with slow-smoked pulled pork shoulder with a vinegar-based BBQ sauce; the wine's bright fruit and lack of oaky sweetness will balance the smoky, tangy flavors of the dish without overwhelming them.
While specific ratings for the 2021 vintage are still emerging, the preceding 2020 vintage garnered significant acclaim, receiving 92 points from James Suckling and 89 points from The Wine Advocate. These scores highlight the consistent quality and exceptional value of this boutique production, which offers a level of complexity often found in much more expensive Rhône blends. It represents a sophisticated yet accessible entry point into the "New Chile" movement.
