Description
Kuen Hof Südtirol Eisacktaler Veltliner 2023
This distinct alpine white is a 100% Grüner Veltliner crafted by the renowned Pliger family in the Eisacktal (Valle Isarco) region of Alto Adige. The genetic material for these vines was originally sourced from the prestigious Wachau region of Austria, finding a unique expression in the steep, terraced vineyards of Northern Italy. The terroir here is dramatic and defining, with vines rooted in skeletal soils of schist, quartz phyllite, and clay at high altitudes between **550 and 700 meters**. The 2023 vintage was characterized by significant climatic contrasts, where a dry spring and wet summer eventually gave way to a "golden autumn." This late-season stability allowed for optimal physiological ripeness while the region's significant diurnal temperature shifts preserved the grapes' essential acidity.
Visually, the wine presents a brilliant pale straw-yellow core with subtle, youthful green reflections. The nose is expressive and highly aromatic, revealing layers of ripe citrus—specifically grapefruit and lemon zest—alongside notes of crisp green apple, white peach, and a delicate floral lift. True to the varietal, these fruit notes are grounded by savory nuances of white pepper, fresh mountain herbs, and a profound "wet stone" minerality. On the palate, this is a dry, medium-bodied wine that impresses with its tension and focus. The texture is elegant and slightly creamy due to lees aging, yet it remains driven by a vibrant, crystalline acidity. Flavors of stone fruit and saline citrus linger on a long, precise finish, concluding with a characteristic savory spice and an appetizing, subtle almond bitterness.
Winemaking at Kuen Hof is a practice of minimal intervention to highlight the site's character. Peter and Brigitte Pliger utilize organic and biodynamic-leaning farming methods, working the precipitous slopes entirely by hand. In the cellar, the fruit undergoes gentle pressing and fermentation with native yeasts. The wine is matured in a combination of stainless steel tanks and large acacia wood barrels, with extended lees contact to enhance mouthfeel without imparting overwhelming oak flavors. This commitment to quality earned the wine a score of 91 points from Falstaff for the 2023 vintage. It is a versatile partner for the table, pairing beautifully with American dishes such as pan-seared scallops with a lemon-butter caper sauce, or a classic buttermilk fried chicken sandwich, where the wine’s crisp acidity cuts through the richness and breading.
