Description
Keermont Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2020
This evocative South African red is a carefully composed blend of 92.2% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7.8% Cabernet Franc. The fruit is sourced primarily from the Cottage Lane Vineyard, situated on the crest of a ridge in the Upper Blaauwklippen Valley between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountain ranges. Here, the vines are rooted in deep red clay loam soils derived from sandstone and granite, sitting at an elevation of approximately 320 meters. The 2020 vintage is widely regarded as excellent for Stellenbosch, characterized by a moderate growing season and welcome rainfall patterns that allowed for slow, even ripening. These conditions resulted in a harvest of exceptional concentration and structural integrity, capturing the unique "mountain" character of the estate.
In the glass, the wine presents a deep, dark ruby color with high opacity and viscosity. The nose is complex and expressive, offering primary aromas of ripe blackcurrant, cassis, and spiced plums, layered with distinct secondary notes of cedarwood, graphite, and pencil lead. A signature touch of "fynbos"—the indigenous wild vegetation of the Cape—adds a savory, herbal dimension reminiscent of wild sage and dried thyme. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, dry wine with a commanding presence. It delivers concentrated flavors of black raspberry, mulberry, and dark cherry compote, supported by a dense, fine-grained tannin structure that coats the mouth. The finish is long and persistent, marked by lingering savory notes of clove and a refreshing mineral lift.
Keermont follows a philosophy of minimal intervention, allowing the terroir to dictate the wine's profile. The estate practices sustainable farming as a member of the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) scheme, focusing on natural balance in the vineyards. In the cellar, the grapes underwent spontaneous fermentation with indigenous wild yeasts in open-top fermenters to ensure complexity. The wine was then matured for 22 months in seasoned French oak barrels, softening the tannins and integrating the flavors before being bottled by hand without filtration. This traditional approach preserves the wine's natural texture and vitality.
The wine's robust structure and savory depth make it an ideal candidate for classic American fare. It pairs beautifully with a grilled ribeye steak, where the dense tannins cut through the marbling and char, while the herbal notes complement a chimichurri or herb butter. Alternatively, try it with slow-braised beef short ribs; the wine's dark fruit and spice will harmonize with the rich, savory glaze of the meat. Critics have praised this vintage highly, with Anthony Mueller for The Wine Advocate awarding it an impressive 94 points, and both Wine Spectator and Tim Atkin MW giving it 91 points. Given these accolades, it represents remarkable value in the world of high-end Cabernet Sauvignon.
