Description
Jean-Paul Paquet, Domaine Fussiacus, Saint-Véran 2024
This elegant white Burgundy is produced entirely from 100% Chardonnay grapes sourced from the hillside vineyards of the Davayé commune. The estate, Domaine Fussiacus, is named after the historic Roman designation for the village of Fuissé, reflecting the deep history of the region. The vines, averaging 25 years of age, are planted on east-southeast facing slopes at an elevation of 250 to 300 meters. The soil composition is a classic Mâconnais mix of clay and limestone (argilo-calcareous), which imparts significant mineral structure to the final wine.
The 2024 vintage in Burgundy marks a return to a more "classic" style following several warm, solar years. A wet spring and humid summer required diligent vineyard management to control mildew, but a warm, dry spell in late August allowed the grapes to achieve physiological ripeness while retaining vibrant natural acidity. Unlike the richer, higher-alcohol vintages of the recent past, the 2024 Saint-Véran is defined by its freshness, tension, and purity of fruit, offering a crisp snapshot of the terroir without the weight of excess heat.
In the glass, the wine presents a pale golden hue with youthful green highlights, displaying excellent clarity and moderate viscosity. The nose is aromatic and expressive, opening with notes of white flowers—specifically acacia and honeysuckle—layered over fresh green apple, lemon verbena, and a distinctive hint of anise or fennel seed. On the palate, this is a dry, medium-bodied wine with a refreshing, zesty backbone. Flavors of crisp Anjou pear, citrus pith, and white peach are complemented by a subtle creaminess derived from lees aging. The finish is long and precise, marked by a stony, saline minerality and a whisper of almond skin.
Jean-Paul Paquet and his son Yannick practice sustainable viticulture, employing organic farming methods such as mechanical plowing and natural cover crops, although they are not officially certified. The winemaking philosophy balances freshness with texture. The grapes are hand-harvested and gently pressed pneumatically. Fermentation occurs using indigenous yeasts to preserve the local character. To achieve harmony, approximately 70% of the wine is aged in stainless steel tanks to retain fruit brightness, while the remaining 30% matures in oak barrels (often older wood or large foudres) for 6 to 8 months. This split élevage adds mouthfeel and complexity without masking the fruit with aggressive oak flavors.
This wine’s bright acidity and moderate weight make it a versatile partner for American cuisine. It pairs beautifully with a New England-style lobster roll; the wine's zesty citrus notes cut through the mayonnaise and butter, while its subtle creaminess mirrors the sweetness of the lobster meat. Alternatively, try it with herb-roasted chicken served with root vegetables, where the wine’s herbal undertones and structure will complement the savory skin and thyme. For a seafood option, pan-seared scallops with a lemon-caper reduction would be an excellent match, highlighting the wine's saline finish.
While specific critic scores for the 2024 vintage are not yet widely available due to its recent release, the Domaine Fussiacus Saint-Véran consistently garners praise for its exceptional value, often scoring in the high 80s to low 90s from publications like Wine Enthusiast in previous years. It represents an affordable entry point into high-quality white Burgundy, offering the complexity of its more famous neighbors in Pouilly-Fuissé at a fraction of the price.
