Description
Jean-Marc Brocard, Chablis, Domaine Saint-Claire 2022
This wine is a definitive expression of 100% Chardonnay, sourced exclusively from the Brocard family's organic vineyards surrounding their winery in the village of Préhy. The fruit comes from vines averaging 30 years of age, deeply rooted in the region's famous Kimmeridgian subsoil—a Jurassic-era terroir composed of limestone, clay, and fossilized oyster shells (Exogyra virgula) that imparts the appellation’s signature saline minerality.
The 2022 vintage in Chablis was characterized by a warm, dry growing season that accelerated ripening, leading to an early harvest in late August. Despite the solar intensity, the vintage achieved a "modern classic" balance, delivering wines with generous fruit weight and rounded textures while maintaining the essential freshness and tension expected of northern Burgundy. The warmth of the year is evident in the wine’s ripe fruit profile, yet the cool nights of the region preserved the acidity necessary for structure.
In the glass, the wine presents a bright pale gold color with shimmering silver-green highlights. The nose is aromatic and complex, opening with notes of Meyer lemon oil, ripe Mirabelle plum, and tangerine blossom, underpinned by a distinct flinty, wet stone character and a whisper of fresh sage. On the palate, this is a dry, medium-bodied Chablis that feels simultaneously dense and energetic. It offers a core of juicy apricot and tart green apple flavors, rounded out by a creamy texture derived from lees aging. The finish is long, precise, and mouth-watering, marked by a savory, iodine-like salinity that speaks clearly of its marine geological origins.
Jean-Marc Brocard is a pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture in Chablis, and the Domaine Saint-Claire bottling is a testament to these sustainable farming practices. In the cellar, the philosophy is strictly non-interventionist to allow the terroir to shine. The wine undergoes fermentation with indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to preserve purity. It completes malolactic fermentation and is aged on fine lees for approximately nine months, adding subtle weight and complexity without the masking influence of oak.
For food pairings, this Chablis shines with American coastal classics. It pairs beautifully with a butter-poached lobster roll; the wine's racy acidity cuts through the richness of the butter and mayonnaise while highlighting the sweetness of the meat. Alternatively, try it with Southern-style fried chicken, where the crisp citrus notes act as a palate cleanser against the savory, fatty breading. For a more elegant option, pan-seared halibut with a lemon-caper sauce is a seamless match.
Critics have praised the 2022 release for its quality-to-price ratio, with scores landing consistently in the 90-92 point range from authorities like Vinous, Decanter, and James Suckling. It is widely regarded as an "affordable gem" and a benchmark for village-level Chablis, offering the complexity of a Premier Cru at a fraction of the cost.
