Description
Henschke Keyneton Euphonium '18 is a masterful composition that harmoniously blends the richness of the Barossa Valley with the elegance of the Eden Valley. Named in honor of the B-flat euphonium played by the Henschke Family Brass Band, this wine is a meticulously crafted blend of 65% Shiraz, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Merlot. The fruit is sourced from vines up to 50 years old, grown in the sandy loams and clay soils of the family’s vineyards. The 2018 vintage was a "super vintage" for the region, characterized by warm, dry conditions that delivered exceptional ripeness and concentration while maintaining the natural acidity essential for longevity.
In the glass, the wine displays a deep crimson core with vibrant ruby and garnet hues, indicative of its richness. The nose is intense and complex, offering a symphony of primary fruit notes such as ripe blackberry, cassis, and Satsuma plum. These are intricately woven with savory secondary aromas of sage, bay leaf, and anise, alongside tertiary hints of cedar, vanilla, and crushed violets derived from careful aging. On the palate, this full-bodied, dry wine impresses with a plush, velvety texture and a core of concentrated dark fruit flavors. Notes of blackcurrant and dark plum are supported by a backbone of fine-grained, dusty tannins and a bright, tangy acidity that drives a long, savory finish laden with baking spices and black pepper.
The Henschke family’s commitment to stewardship is evident in their farming and winemaking. Viticulturist Prue Henschke champions organic and biodynamic practices, utilizing wheat straw mulch and compost to build soil health and retain moisture in the vineyards. In the cellar, the wine was matured for 18 months in a combination of 71% French and 29% American oak hogsheads (20% new, 80% seasoned), allowing the oak to support the fruit without overpowering it. This minimal intervention approach ensures the unique terroir of the Barossa and Eden Valleys shines through.
Critically acclaimed, this vintage has secured 95 points from both James Suckling and Wine Enthusiast, as well as 92 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, marking it as an exceptional value for a wine of this pedigree. It is approachable now but possesses the structure to age gracefully for 15 to 20 years. For food pairings, this wine demands bold, savory flavors. It pairs beautifully with a classic American grilled ribeye steak with a peppercorn crust, as the wine's tannins cut through the marbling while the spice notes mirror the pepper. Alternatively, try it with slow-roasted lamb shoulder with rosemary and garlic; the herbal notes in the wine will sing in harmony with the dish.
