Description
Gian Luca Colombo Langhe Pinot Nero 2023
This wine is a pure, singular expression of 100% Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir), a rarity in a region dominated by Nebbiolo. The fruit is sourced from select high-elevation, cool-climate vineyards located within the prestigious municipalities of Barolo, Novello, and Dogliani. These specific plots are chosen for their ability to retain acidity and aromatic complexity, essential for high-quality Pinot Nero. Gian Luca Colombo, a rising star in Piedmont, manages these sites with meticulous care, ensuring that the distinct terroir of the Langhe—calcareous marl and clay soils—is translated transparently into the glass.
The 2023 vintage in Piedmont was characterized by a "roller coaster" growing season, featuring a wet spring followed by a hot summer. However, the high-altitude positioning of Colombo's Pinot Nero vines protected the grapes from excessive heat stress, while the late August rains provided a necessary cooling effect just prior to harvest. This allowed the fruit to achieve phenolic ripeness while maintaining the vibrant acidity and "crunch" that defines the vintage. The result is a wine that balances the warmth of the year with the structural elegance typical of the region.
In the glass, the wine displays a brilliant ruby red hue with subtle, youthful purple highlights. The nose is immediately captivating, offering a bouquet of sour raspberry, morello cherry, and wild strawberry, layered with delicate floral notes of violet and rose petal. As it opens, tertiary hints of damp earth and undergrowth appear, complemented by a touch of sweet spice—specifically cinnamon and clove—derived from the oak aging. On the palate, this medium-bodied, dry wine is energetic and refined. It features a core of juicy red fruit supported by fine-grained, silky tannins and a lively, fresh acidity. The finish is persistent and clean, marked by a distinctive chalky minerality and a lingering note of tart cherry.
Gian Luca Colombo is a fervent advocate for biodynamic and organic viticulture, viewing himself primarily as a farmer who respects the rhythms of nature. His winemaking philosophy is one of minimal intervention: grapes are harvested manually and undergo spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in steel tanks. A defining characteristic of this wine is its extended maceration on the skins, lasting approximately 30 days, which extracts depth and texture without heaviness. The wine is then aged for roughly 9 months in a combination of used French oak barriques and large Austrian oak casks before being bottled unfiltered to preserve its authentic texture and flavor profile.
For food pairings, this elegant Pinot Nero shines with dishes that bridge the gap between earthiness and fruit. It pairs beautifully with cedar-plank grilled salmon, where the wine's acidity cuts through the richness of the fish while the smoky wood notes complement the oak spice. Alternatively, try it with a roast pork tenderloin with a cranberry-herb glaze; the tart red fruit in the wine mirrors the glaze, while the tannins structure the meal. It is also an excellent companion to a classic Thanksgiving turkey dinner with all the trimmings.
Gian Luca Colombo was the winner of the prestigious Giulio Gambelli Prize for Italy's best young winemaker, a testament to his talent and dedication. While specific critic scores for the 2023 vintage are still forthcoming, previous vintages have consistently garnered high praise for their Burgundian elegance married with Piedmontese soul. This wine represents exceptional value in its class, offering a level of artisanal craftsmanship often found in wines at twice the price.
