Description
Domaine La Roubine, Vacqueyras 2023
This soulful Southern Rhône red is a testament to the dedication of husband-and-wife team Eric and Sophie Ughetto, who have crafted a "bruiser with a heart of gold." A classic blend comprising 70% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and 15% Mourvèdre, this wine is born from organically farmed vines situated on clay-limestone terraces near the majestic Dentelles de Montmirail. The Ughettos prioritize biodiversity and old-school, hands-on viticulture, believing that rigorous vineyard work allows the wine to essentially make itself, resulting in fruit that is bursting with personality before it even reaches the cellar.
The 2023 vintage in Vacqueyras is being hailed as a "grand millésime," or great vintage, characterized by a wet preceding winter that replenished soil reserves, followed by a growing season that facilitated perfect ripening. In the cellar, the winemaking is decidedly minimalist; fermentation occurs with native yeasts, with Grenache and Mourvèdre co-fermented in one tank while Syrah is handled separately. The wine is then aged for approximately 14 months in a split regimen: 50% in concrete vats to preserve fruit vibrancy and 50% in neutral oak demi-muids to round out the texture. It is bottled without fining or filtration to maintain its authentic character.
In the glass, the wine reveals a deep, brooding ruby-purple hue with high viscosity, clinging to the sides of the glass. The nose offers an intoxicating bouquet of dark, brambly fruits, specifically black cherry and ripe plum, interwoven with savory notes of garrigue—the classic Provençal scent of wild herbs—cracked black pepper, and a hint of smoked meat. On the palate, this is a full-bodied and decidedly dry wine, showcasing rich intensity without heaviness. Flavors of mulled cherry, olive paste, and licorice are wrapped in a structure of supple, dusty tannins that are present but not aggressive. The finish is persistent, evolving into complex tertiary notes of worn leather and five-spice.
While final bottle scores for the 2023 vintage are still rolling in, preliminary reports from critics like Jeb Dunnuck have praised the barrel samples with ranges of 89-91 points, highlighting the wine's "uber-rich" profile and plush concentration. Domaine La Roubine consistently garners high praise for its price-to-quality ratio, offering a level of depth often found in more expensive Gigondas bottlings. This vintage is expected to peak starting in 2026. For food pairings, this robust red pairs beautifully with braised short ribs served over creamy polenta, where the wine's structure cuts through the rich fat and gelatinous texture of the meat. Alternatively, it would be divine with a grilled leg of lamb seasoned with rosemary and garlic, as the gaminess of the lamb perfectly echoes the wine's savory garrigue and olive notes.
