Description
Cuatro Rayas, Rueda Verdejo Green & Social
This vibrant white wine is a varietal showcase composed of 100% Verdejo, the signature grape of the region. It hails from the distinguished Rueda DO in Castilla y León, Spain, where the high-altitude plateau (approximately 700 to 800 meters above sea level) plays a critical role in viticulture. The terroir is defined by its "cascajos" soil—gravelly, stony earth that retains heat and provides excellent drainage. The region's severe continental climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and cold winters with significant diurnal temperature shifts, allows the grapes to develop intense aromatics while retaining the high natural acidity essential for premium Verdejo.
In the glass, the wine displays a brilliant pale straw-yellow core with youthful, electric green reflections that hint at its freshness. The nose is highly aromatic and expressive, leading with classic varietal markers of fennel, anise, and fresh hay. These herbal tones are beautifully layered with primary fruit notes of zesty lemon, pink grapefruit, and green apple, alongside subtle tropical hints of passion fruit and a delicate floral lift reminiscent of honeysuckle. On the palate, this is a dry, medium-bodied wine that balances a fleshy texture with piercing, crisp acidity. The flavor profile echoes the nose with concentrated notes of lime zest, white peach, and a savory, balsamic undertone, concluding with a long, mineral-driven finish that is clean and refreshing.
The "Green & Social" label represents a profound commitment to sustainability and social responsibility by Bodega Cuatro Rayas. The grapes are organically farmed without herbicides or pesticides and harvested mechanically at night to prevent oxidation and preserve volatile aromatic compounds. In the winery, fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks using native yeasts—a distinct choice that enhances the wine's natural character. Following fermentation, the wine undergoes aging on its lees (sur lie) for a minimum of three months with periodic batonnage, adding mouthfeel and complexity. The packaging is equally innovative, featuring lightweight recycled glass, a plastic-free aluminum capsule, and a closure derived from sugar cane with a zero carbon footprint.
This Verdejo's bright acidity and herbal complexity make it a versatile companion for American cuisine. It pairs exceptionally well with a New England lobster roll, where the wine's citrus zest cuts through the richness of the mayonnaise and butter while highlighting the sweetness of the shellfish. Alternatively, try it with Baja-style grilled mahi-mahi tacos topped with a lime crema; the wine's crispness mirrors the squeeze of lime and stands up to the char of the fish. For a poultry option, a lemon-herb roasted chicken with thyme and rosemary will harmonize perfectly with the wine's distinct fennel and balsamic notes.
Critically, this wine is recognized as a standout value. The 2021 vintage was awarded 90 points and a "Best Buy" designation by Wine Enthusiast, praising its lively mouthfeel and bold acidity. More recently, the wine secured a Gold Medal (94 points) at the Organic Wine Award International, solidifying its status as a high-quality, affordable choice in the organic white wine category.
