This wine is a pure expression of its grape, crafted from 100% Tempranillo. The grapes are sourced from certified organic vineyards within the Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León region of Spain, where the vines average 30 years of age. The terroir is characterized by a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters, and the vines are planted in alluvial terrace soils of sand, clay, and pebbles which contribute to the wine’s structure. Producer Bodega Cuatro Rayas, a cooperative founded in 1935, follows a comprehensive ‘Green & Social’ sustainability philosophy, utilizing organic farming, vegan-friendly methods, and eco-friendly packaging like sugarcane corks and lightweight recycled glass.
In the glass, the wine presents a clean, bright, medium-depth ruby red color with youthful purple reflections. The nose is intense and inviting, offering primary aromas of ripe dark fruits like blackberry and dried cherry, layered with secondary notes of cedar, smoky tobacco, and a hint of licorice from its time in oak. On the palate, this is a classic dry and medium-bodied Tempranillo. It delivers a soft, velvety texture with a well-defined flavor profile of black plum, fig, and deep herbs, supported by a perfect balance between vibrant acidity and fine, chalky tannins. The winemaking involves temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel followed by a brief three-month maturation in oak barrels, which integrates the flavors and adds complexity, leading to a round and persistent finish.
This versatile Tempranillo has been recognized for its quality, with the 2020 vintage earning an 89-point “Best Buy” rating from the Beverage Testing Institute. It pairs exceptionally well with American-style barbecue, such as slow-smoked pork ribs, where the wine’s acidity cuts through the richness and its smoky notes complement the char. It would also be an excellent match for a gourmet burger topped with aged cheddar, as its structured tannins and fruit profile stand up to the savory meat and cheese.
