Description
Clement & Florian Berthier “Terre de Silex” Coteaux du Giennois Blanc 2022
This distinct and expressive white wine is crafted from 100% Sauvignon Blanc, showcasing the precision and purity that the Berthier brothers are known for. Hailing from the Coteaux du Giennois appellation—a rising star region located just north of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé—this cuvée is a study in specific terroir. The grapes are sourced exclusively from a single plot in the commune of Saint-Père, where the vines are rooted in 100% flint (silex) soils from the Cretaceous period. The 2022 vintage in the Loire Valley was characterized by a warm, solar growing season, resulting in fruit with excellent ripeness and concentration, yet the unique flint soils helped preserve a taut, refreshing acidity that keeps the wine impeccably balanced.
In the glass, the wine reveals a brilliant pale gold hue with shimmering clarity. The nose is immediately arresting, dominated by the signature "gunflint" and smoky mineral notes typical of silex soils, which harmoniously intertwine with vibrant aromas of fresh grapefruit, white pear, and delicate acacia flowers. On the palate, this is a dry, medium-bodied wine that delivers a striking combination of texture and tension. A supple, rounded entry—courtesy of extended lees contact—quickly gives way to a focused, energetic mid-palate bursting with zesty lime, green apple, and passion fruit flavors. The finish is long, saline, and persistently mineral, leaving a refreshing sensation of crushed stone and citrus zest.
Fifth-generation winemakers Clément and Florian Berthier manage this estate with a philosophy centered on letting the land speak. For this vintage, they achieved a significant milestone, with the estate gaining organic certification in 2022. Their winemaking approach is one of minimal intervention to preserve the fruit's integrity. Upon harvest, the grapes undergo a delicate pressing followed by a 36-hour settling period. Fermentation occurs naturally in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks to retain freshness, after which the wine is aged on its fine lees for several months. This technique enhances the wine's mouthfeel and complexity without masking the flinty terroir with oak.
The wine's structured minerality and crisp acidity make it a versatile companion for the table. For a classic pairing, serve this with a warm goat cheese salad featuring arugula and a lemon vinaigrette; the wine's acid cuts through the creaminess of the chèvre perfectly. For a more substantial American-leaning dish, pair it with grilled swordfish steaks topped with a caper and herb butter, or a platter of fresh Oysters Rockefeller, where the wine's smoky notes will complement the richness of the cooked oysters. Critics have praised the 2022 vintage, with experts awarding it scores as high as 92 points, cementing its status as a remarkable value alternative to the pricier Sauvignon Blancs of neighboring Sancerre.
