Description
Catena Alta Malbec Historic Rows 2021
This exceptional wine is a 100% Malbec varietal, masterfully assembled from the Catena family’s "Historic Rows" within their estate vineyards in Mendoza. The blend comprises meticulously selected fruit from Lot 18 of the Angélica vineyard (Lunlunta), Lot 4 of the La Pirámide vineyard (Agrelo), Lot 1 of the Nicasia vineyard (Altamira), Lot 6 of the Angélica Sur vineyard, and Lot 9 of the famous Adrianna vineyard (Gualtallary). Each site contributes unique characteristics, ranging from the loamy clay of Angélica to the gravel and limestone of Adrianna, creating a complex tapestry of high-altitude terroir.
The 2021 vintage in Mendoza was defined by a cool growing season, often compared to the freshness of 2016 but with drier conditions. This climate allowed for a slow, even ripening process that preserved vibrant natural acidity while developing deep phenolic maturity. The result is a wine that balances the intense concentration of high-altitude viticulture with a distinct elegance and "crunchy" fruit profile that sets this vintage apart as particularly refined.
In the glass, the wine pours a deep, opaque violet color with purple highlights. The nose is highly aromatic and expressive, offering a bouquet of ripe black cherries, fresh plums, and blueberries, interwoven with delicate floral notes of crushed violets and lavender. Secondary aromas of mocha, tobacco, and a hint of white pepper emerge with aeration, supported by subtle vanilla and cedar spice. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, dry red that feels remarkably silky and polished. The flavor profile is layered with blackberry preserves, cassis, and a touch of savory leather, underpinned by a streak of flinty minerality. The tannins are velvety and fine-grained, leading to a long, persistent finish driven by the vintage's signature bright acidity.
Bodega Catena Zapata is a pioneer in sustainable high-altitude farming, and their "Alta" line represents a philosophy of non-intervention to let the vineyard speak. The winemaking involves whole berry fermentation with wild yeasts to enhance aromatic complexity. Each vineyard lot is vinified separately before blending. The wine is aged for approximately 18 months in French oak barrels (a mix of new, second, and third use), which integrates the structure without masking the vibrant fruit character.
For food pairings, this Malbec’s structure and acidity make it a versatile companion for rich American cuisine. It pairs beautifully with a grilled ribeye steak topped with herb butter, as the tannins cut through the marbling while the fruit complements the char. For a classic barbecue option, try it with slow-smoked Texas brisket; the wine’s peppery spice notes echo the bark of the meat. Alternatively, a gourmet bison burger with aged cheddar and caramelized onions offers a casual yet decadent match, highlighting the wine’s savory depth.
Critics have praised the 2021 vintage for its precision and energy. Vinous (Joaquin Hidalgo) awarded it 95 points, highlighting its complexity and flow, while James Suckling gave it 94 points, noting its "juicy, fresh" character. These scores solidify its status as a benchmark for Argentine Malbec, offering incredible value and sophistication in its class.
