Description
Calyptra Marginado 2021
This distinctively modern wine is a single-varietal expression of 100% Syrah, sourced exclusively from Calyptra's estate vineyards in the Alto Cachapoal Valley. The "Marginado" (meaning "Outcast") label reflects the winery's departure from traditional methods, utilizing specific blocks situated in a ravine within the Andean foothills. These vines benefit from the region's intense thermal amplitude, where warm sunny days are tempered by cooling mountain winds, preserving the grape's natural acidity and aromatic complexity.
The 2021 vintage in the Cachapoal Andes was characterized by cooler-than-average temperatures and significant freshness, resulting in a wine of exceptional vibrancy and tension. The growing season saw rain events in January followed by a cool February, which allowed for slow, steady ripening without excessive sugar accumulation. This climate profile, combined with the free-draining colluvial soils of the Andean slopes, produced a Syrah that prioritizes elegance and floral lift over sheer power.
In the glass, the wine displays a striking, deep purple color with vivid magenta hues, indicative of its youth and extraction. The nose is highly expressive and complex, bursting with primary aromas of wild blueberries, crushed plums, and tart wild strawberries—a signature of its unique fermentation method. Secondary notes of white pepper, crushed violets, and a distinct mineral graphite character add depth, while the absence of new oak allows a pure, earthy "wet clay" nuance to shine through. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet surprisingly nimble, defined by a "nervy" acidity and a core of crunchy black fruit. The wine is dry, with a texture that is simultaneously juicy and chalky, supported by firm, fine-grained tannins that lead to a long, savory finish.
The winemaking behind Marginado is what truly sets it apart. Following a hand-harvest and strict cluster selection, the process involves a split fermentation: approximately 60% undergoes traditional alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel, while the remaining 40% is subjected to carbonic maceration. This technique enhances the bright, fresh fruit profile and floral aromatics. Crucially, the wine is then aged for roughly 8 months in 1,000-liter clay jars (amphorae) rather than oak barrels. This oxidative but wood-free aging vessel softens the texture while preserving the raw, authentic expression of the terroir.
For food pairings, this Syrah's peppery bite and high acidity make it a brilliant match for rich, smoky American classics. It pairs beautifully with slow-smoked beef brisket, where the wine's pepper notes complement the bark and its acidity cuts through the rendered fat. Alternatively, try it with grilled lamb chops finished with a rosemary-garlic rub, as the herbal notes in the wine will echo the seasoning. For a vegetarian option, a wild mushroom risotto with truffle oil highlights the wine's earthy, forest-floor characteristics.
While specific major critic scores for the 2021 vintage are pending final publication, the wine holds a strong 4.2-star rating on Vivino and previous vintages have consistently scored in the 92-95 point range from critics like Tim Atkin MW and Descorchados. It represents excellent value for a boutique, terroir-driven Syrah of this caliber.
