Description
Boniperti Vignaioli, Bartön FARA 2020
This distinguished red wine is a traditional Alto Piemonte blend, meticulously composed of 70% Nebbiolo and 30% Vespolina. The grapes are exclusively sourced from the Bartön vineyard, a specific one-acre plot planted in 2007 within the Fara DOCG, which stands as the southernmost appellation of the region. The terroir here is defined by acidic, fast-draining glacial soils featuring a mix of sand, silt, and clay, situated at an elevation of 250 meters. The 2020 vintage proved to be excellent for the region; a dry winter and replenishing spring rains led to a warm growing season free of intense heat spikes. A cooler September facilitated the ideal, slow ripening of the Nebbiolo grapes, preserving acidity while developing complex aromatics.
In the glass, the wine presents a brilliant ruby-garnet hue that catches the light. The nose is complex and layered, immediately offering aromas of macerated dark cherry, redcurrant, and fragrant sandalwood. These primary notes are elegantly complemented by secondary characteristics of menthol, licorice, and subtle baking spices, while aeration reveals balsamic inflections and earthy floral hints. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and definitively dry, confirming the aromatic promise with a core of pure red fruit flavors. The mouthfeel is defined by a refined structure, featuring bright, nervous acidity and supple, well-integrated tannins that lead into a persistent, savory finish.
Proprietor Gilberto Boniperti adheres to a philosophy of meticulous, hands-on vineyard management with a strong emphasis on sustainable and organic farming practices. The winemaking approach is traditional and minimalist, designed to highlight the specific terroir of Fara. The wine underwent a significant 30-day maceration on the skins to extract color and tannin, followed by aging for 14 months in large, 22-hectoliter neutral oak casks. This use of neutral wood ensures the varietal character remains obscured by oak artifacts. The 2020 vintage received high praise, securing a score of 94 points from Vinous, which lauded it as a "terrific" and "classy, elegant wine," making it an exceptional value for its quality tier.
For food pairings with an American sensibility, this wine's high acidity and savory depth offer excellent versatility. It pairs beautifully with slow-roasted pork shoulder seasoned with fresh herbs and garlic; the wine's acidity cuts through the rich fat of the pork while the earthy notes complement the meat's savoriness. Alternatively, serve this with a grilled flat iron steak topped with wild mushroom compound butter, where the char of the beef and the umami of the mushrooms will resonate perfectly with the wine's licorice and balsamic undertones.
