Description
Bodegas Navarrsotillo, Gaupasa Garnacha Rosé 2025
This vibrant rosé is crafted from 100% Garnacha, sourced from the family-owned estate vineyards in the Ribera Alta subzone of DO Navarra, Spain. The 2025 vintage was characterized by a relatively mild, wet spring that replenished the water tables, followed by a warm, dry summer with ample growing degree days. Crucially, the cooler, Atlantic-influenced nights in late August and early September allowed the grapes to retain their natural acidity while achieving optimal phenolic ripeness. Harvest took place in mid-September, yielding pristine fruit that perfectly expresses the region's unique terroir of fine clay, gravel, and limestone soils.
In the glass, the wine presents a brilliant, pale salmon-pink hue with crystalline clarity and a light, fluid viscosity that hints at its refreshing nature. The nose is highly aromatic and inviting, bursting with primary fruit notes of wild strawberry, crushed watermelon, and tart red cherry. These bright fruit aromas are beautifully layered with secondary hints of delicate rose petal, white pepper, and a distinct crushed-stone minerality, while remaining completely free of any tertiary aging characteristics due to its youthful release.
On the palate, this is a decidedly dry, medium-bodied rosé that balances juicy fruit concentration with a mouthwatering, zesty acidity. Flavors of ripe pink grapefruit, wild raspberry, and a touch of blood orange dominate the attack, seamlessly transitioning into a supple, smooth mid-palate with a very soft, barely-there tannin structure. The finish is crisp, savory, and remarkably long for a rosé, leaving a lingering impression of wet stone and subtle citrus zest.
Bodegas Navarrsotillo is deeply committed to sustainable agriculture, farming their vineyards under strict, Demeter-certified biodynamic and certified organic practices. The grapes are hand-harvested and vinified with minimal intervention to ensure transparent terroir expression. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with native yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, followed by five to six months of aging on the fine lees in 100% stainless steel to build texture without the use of oak. The wine is bottled with minimal sulfur dioxide and is certified vegan. The name "Gaupasa" is a Basque term loosely translating to "staying out all night," perfectly capturing the producer's philosophy of creating a fun, energetic, and highly approachable wine.
This versatile rosé is a fantastic companion for classic American cuisine. It pairs beautifully with grilled shrimp tacos topped with a spicy mango salsa, where the wine's vibrant acidity cuts through the heat and complements the sweet fruit. It is also an excellent match for a smoked pulled pork sandwich; the dry, medium-bodied profile and bright berry notes provide a refreshing counterpoint to the rich, tangy barbecue sauce. For a lighter option, serve it alongside a classic Cobb salad, as the wine's savory undertones and crisp finish perfectly balance the salty bacon and creamy blue cheese.
While the 2025 vintage is just hitting the market and has not yet been formally reviewed by major publications like Wine Spectator or the Wine Advocate, previous vintages have consistently earned solid 88 to 90-point scores from regional critics. Regardless of formal accolades, this wine represents an extraordinary value in its class, typically retailing well under twenty dollars and offering a level of biodynamic purity rarely found at this accessible price point.
