Description
Bodega Garzon Single Vineyard Tannat 2019
This wine is a pure, 100% Tannat, representing the flagship expression of Uruguay's signature grape from the Maldonado region. Sourced from specific, high-quality blocks within the estate, it showcases the unique "Ballast" soil—decomposed granite known as the crystalline basement—which is among the oldest geological formations on earth. Located just 11 miles from the Atlantic Ocean, the vineyard benefits from constant maritime breezes that temper the ripening process. The 2019 vintage was characterized by cooler and wetter conditions than average, a climatic shift that favored elegance and vibrant acidity over sheer power, resulting in a wine that feels surprisingly fresh and lifted despite its inherent structural depth.
In the glass, the wine pours an opaque, deep purple with a viscous consistency that coats the sides of the glass. The nose offers a complex and aromatic profile, leading with intense notes of black cherries, ripe strawberries, and black plums. As it opens, secondary nuances of tobacco leaf, dark chocolate, and fresh nutmeg emerge, underpinned by a subtle floral whisper of violets. On the palate, this is a full-bodied and dry wine, yet it defies the rustic reputation of the varietal. It presents a juicy attack with high acidity that balances the firm, fine-grained tannins. The flavor profile expands to include licorice, graphite, and wild blackberries, culminating in a long, polished finish that speaks to its meticulous upbringing.
Bodega Garzón is a pioneer in modern Uruguayan winemaking, renowned for being the first winery outside North America to achieve LEED certification for its sustainable facilities. Under the guidance of consultant winemaker Alberto Antonini, the estate employs a philosophy of minimal intervention to highlight terroir. For this vintage, the grapes were fermented in 80-hectolitre concrete tanks to preserve purity. Maturation took place over 12 to 18 months in large (25 to 50 HL), untoasted French oak casks. This specific choice of untoasted large-format oak allows the fruit to micro-oxygenate and soften without imparting aggressive vanilla or toast flavors, maintaining the wine's tension and fruit focus.
Critically, this vintage has been highly decorated, receiving an impressive 96 points from Tim Atkin MW and 93 points from James Suckling, solidifying its status as a world-class wine that offers exceptional value compared to French or Californian peers of similar stature. Its structure makes it an ideal candidate for rich, protein-heavy dishes. It pairs magnificently with a charcoal-grilled Tomahawk steak, where the tannins cut through the marbling. For an American-inspired pairing, try it with smoked Texas brisket; the wine's dark fruit and tobacco notes complement the smoky bark and rendered fat perfectly. Alternatively, a rich duck confit cassoulet will highlight the wine's savory, spicy undertones.
