Description
Antiquum Juel Pinot Noir 2022
This wine represents a distinct and holistic expression of the Antiquum estate, crafted as a true field blend of 100% Pinot Noir. Rather than fermenting individual blocks separately, winemaker Stephen Hagen harvests all six clonal selections grown on the property (including Pommard, Wädenswil, and various Dijon clones) on the same day and co-ferments them. This "class picture" approach captures a complete snapshot of the vineyard's personality in a single vessel, prioritizing the ecosystem's collective voice over individual varietal characteristics.
The 2022 vintage in the Willamette Valley was defined by dramatic resilience. Following a nerve-wracking April frost that threatened yields, the season rebounded with a warm, extended summer and a pristine October, allowing for optimal physiological ripeness. Antiquum Farm is situated at a high elevation of 800 feet on the edge of the valley, yet it functions as a climatic anomaly, often recording some of the warmest daytime temperatures in the region. This heat, combined with the site's thin, marine sedimentary Bellpine soils and rapid nighttime cooling, produces fruit that balances intense concentration with electric acidity.
In the glass, the 2022 Juel presents a brilliant, pale ruby color with exceptional clarity. The nose is complex and brooding, offering aromas of ripe red cherries and wild raspberries that intermingle with savory notes of black tea, forest floor, and dried herbs. As the wine opens, subtle hints of baking spice and vanilla emerge from the oak aging. On the palate, this is a dry, medium-bodied wine that strikes a balance between power and elegance. Flavors of dark cherry and bramble fruit are supported by a vibrant, high-toned acidity and medium-grained tannins that provide a structural backbone without being aggressive. The finish is long and silky, leaving a lingering impression of fruit and earth.
The soul of this wine lies in Hagen's pioneering "Grazing-Based Viticulture." This regenerative farming method eliminates synthetic inputs and fertilizers, relying instead on a rotational flock of sheep, pigs, and poultry to manage the vineyard floor and cycle nutrients naturally. In the cellar, the wine is fermented with native yeasts to preserve its wild character and aged for approximately 11 months in French oak barrels, with about 40% being new wood. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered, maintaining its raw energy and textural depth.
For food pairings, this Pinot Noir shines with Pacific Northwest cuisine. It pairs beautifully with cedar plank-grilled salmon with a cherry glaze, as the wood smoke and fruit glaze echo the wine's own savory and red fruit profiles. Alternatively, try it with a roast chicken stuffed with wild mushroom and herb dressing; the wine's earthiness and acidity will cut through the richness of the poultry skin while complementing the savory umami of the mushrooms.
Critics have lauded this vintage for its tension and balance. Both Wine Spectator and James Suckling awarded the 2022 Juel 92 points, with spectators noting its "brooding and deeply structured" nature. Given the labor-intensive farming and small-production handcrafting involved, it remains a remarkable value in the landscape of high-end Willamette Valley Pinot Noir.
